Types of arrhythmia
Most tachycardias are reentrant, resulting from a wavefront of continuous excitation. The substrate for reentry may involve normal cardiac pathways injured by disease or extra/congenital pathways. Rarer mechanisms include triggered activity and abnormal automaticity. Types of heart-racing that are most common among the general population include atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and supraventricular tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia – which are discussed in detail in this section of the site.
